Precision Kickers and Punters
*Year round training for the serious kicker, punter, snapper or holder.
Evaluation
Kyle Cinzio
I have coached Kyle for three years. He has developed into a very dependable kicker and punter. I have coached kickers and punters that have performed at every level for over 20 years. These are my qualifications for this report.
Practice Regimen
Kyle’s practice regimen is a building block approach that is designed to dial in proper technique before punting with full power.
Kyle works out (punts) a minimum of three times per week from March through the end of each football season.
His work ethic is beyond question and his desire to be the best punter keeps him focused and productive in practice sessions.
Punting technique---
Kyle has a simple and repeatable style.
His good hands are a big asset to his punting technique.
He is well balanced from set up to follow through.
His technique benefits from his comprehensive attention to detail.
Kyle has worked hard on balance and maintaining a straight and solid path to the punt.
Although his punt leg torques a bit early from right to left, Kyle’s contact point is still high on his foot where he can maximize power. Kyle’s contact point is very consistent. Again, in spite of his early torque in his kicking leg, Kyle explodes straight up and gets full extension of his kicking leg before descending straight down. Kyle works hard at maintaining a down field carry of less than 8”. In other words, when he is airborne, his body does not float down field very much, which maximizes his upward thrust.
Kyle has also seen significant benefit in the work he has put into maintaining proper posture during his punt. He is slightly leaning forward from his hips. His shoulders remain level and his head is high. This allows Kyle to clear the path for his extension as his leg accelerates straight up.
The work on balance has also paid off in making Kyle’s drop very consistent. As with most punters, we had focused on the drop early in his career. With good ‘drop’ fundamentals in place, we spend most of our workouts working on balance. Kyle;s balance insures a good drop.
Kyle most often punts a tight spiral that turns over. He is very consistent with that. When he misses, his spiral does not turn over,…but he hits a spiral almost every time.
His hang times range from 3.8 to 4.8. His average hang time is 4.2. Kyle will occasionally hit a 5.0 punt, as well as something less than 3.8 if it is a complete mis-hit..
Kyle averages 40-45 yards per punt from the line of scrimmage. He has hit several punts significantly further.
I rate Kyle as a very consistent punter. On a scale of 1-10, his consistency is 8.5.
His power rating on a scale of 1-10 is 7.5.
He has excellent power for High School
His steps are extremely consistent. (Kyle has often kicked field goals while blindfolded before he takes his steps away from the block.)
Kyle is relatively upright at impact and he maintains discipline in finishing all of his kicks with a solid ‘post contact’ routine.
His body is always square to the target flight path of the ball from setup through follow through.
Kick off technique
Kyle uses a 10 yard step scheme.
His follow through begins on his kicking leg to maximize his power.
Kyle consistently hits kickoffs on the proper part of his foot.
Kyle can make adjustments in his approach to put the ball right or left on request of coaches.
Field goals
Kyle has strength that will easily allow him to kick from distances up to 50 yards.
Kyle currently kicks off of a 1” block and is currently practicing regularly kicking without a block.
Kyle’s charting regimen usually consists of 48 kicks from ranges of 25 yards to 50 yards including angles from anywhere between the hash marks.
It is unusual for Kyle to miss 3 kicks or more in one charting session. (We have repeated this routine many times in the past three years, gradually pushing the distance as Kyle has become stronger.)
Kyle has a small hitch step in his approach that allows him to adjust timing and maximize his strength.
Kyle’s contact timing, while dependent on his high school snapper and holder, is consistently below 1.5 seconds.
Kyle gets the ball up quickly and has a slight, consistent right to left draw.
Kick offs
Kyle’s kick offs are strong and consistent.
Kyle has hang times that range between 3.6 and 4.2.
His distance is consistently between the five yard line and 2 yards deep.
Mental game
Kyle is one of the most mentally tough athletes that I have trained.
He is well schooled on the philosophy of kicking and can be depended on in pressure game situations.
Kyle is always prepared during a game. He never seems to lose focus, in spite of what might be happening on the field.
Recommendations:
I suggest that Kyle continue to hone his place kicking skills in practice without the use of the 1” block to prepare him for the next level. I am confident that Kyle is on track to do this.
Kyle should continue to train, including lifting and running to add comfortable distance to his kick offs.
While Kyle has 50 yard ability with confidence, he has 55 yard distance with some sacrifice in accuracy. I suggest that Kyle continue to train so that he can add 5 yards to his comfort range. In the three years that we have worked together, I have seen Kyle’s strength grow naturally and regularly. Kyle is a tall kicker and is very strong. He has a very fast leg. As his body continues to mature, I have no doubt that Kyle will add at least 5 yards to his comfort range.
